5 Questions with a Dress for Success Entrepreneur

At Dress for Success, our goal is to see women walk out our doors empowered and motivated in work and life. For Small Business Saturday, we wanted to highlight one of our amazing clients that has worked tirelessly to start her own company, J’enessence.

What’s the name of your business and what services or goods do you provide?

J’enessence and I sell bath and body products.

What inspired you to be an entrepreneur?

Having a humble beginning always motivated me and pushed me to achieve higher goals and believing in yourself that you can achieve those goals. My inspiration comes from never wanting to be broke again. Another important inspiration is that I want to be an example, if I can do it, you can do it too.

What have been some of the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

It’s all about persistency, consistency, and faith. New challenges always arise when you make changes – it’s all about how well you deal with them. However, I would say some of the most common challenges about starting your own business are time, money, management skills, learning new tools and not giving up. It’s also physical, mental, and at times emotional. I still deal with challenges and have more work to do, however giving up is not an option. When there’s a will, there’s a way.

What advice would you give to other women looking to start their own company?

Just do it. Have your plan, have faith and make sure it is what you want. You will most likely have to learn new tools, take new classes if necessary, and even make adjustments if needed. Procrastination and stress is never the solution. Listen to feedback, suggestions, not the negativity and stay positive. Having a network of good friends and supportive people who can help you in different areas is always a plus. Always ask and receive advice. It’s a tough road in the beginning and continuous work throughout, but nothing worth having comes easy. Lastly, having people you personally admire and look up to helps a lot. Don’t spend too much time with people who don’t have the same admiration or goal as you as it will bring your spirit down. If it calls for you to have more alone time, so be it, it’s all about your choice.

What tools/skills did Dress for Success provide to help you excel both personally and professionally with your business?

Professionally, financial literacy class made me more aware of my spending and how to manage it. I believe Dress for Success offers excel tutorials and other office applications that’s a huge asset if you plan on having a business.  My personal favorite is the constant support – the never ending hope and faith they put in you. All women come to Dress for Success with a common goal: to improve themselves, increase their value and skills, realize their worth and to be a better person; regardless of which stage of their lives they’re in. Having a strong support is essential to achieve all of that.

What does “Success” mean to you?

It means achieving my goals. Some of them might change from time to time. When I was young, it was getting an education, then starting a career. Now it’s starting a profitable business.
