For Women’s History Month, we celebrated the empowering women that work at our affiliate locations all around the world. These ladies are making an impact in someone’s life every single day and we thank them for their commitment to the organization. Throughout the month of March we featured the women who are truly making a difference at their affiliate locations. Today marks the last day of Women’s History Month but we plan on celebrating women every day. Women helping women is what Dress for Success is all about and we see that power of women coming together impact a number of lives. Meet Monica Narvaez Ojeda, of Dress for Success Mexico City and read below to find out what motivates her to continue her work with the organization.
Dress for Success: How many years have you been with the organization?
Monica Narvaez Ojeda: 8 years
DFS: What bold action did you take to make a change or a difference?
MNO: When Dress for Success Mexico City started, we had a very small impact because the location of the office was not very accessible. I decided to take the program directly to the communities which is not easy because you have to get in touch with the community leader. I focused on the communities that were in need the most and where women have fewer opportunities, because of discrimination and femicide.
After that change, our training groups of 15 women, increased to 200-350 women. Which definitely impacted our results and those of the target population. We currently have workshops to start a business so women can generate their own income through solar dehydrators. This is a new project that we will be starting soon. We are constantly innovating and searching for new alliances.
DFS: Can you describe a moment when you helped someone at Dress for Success that moved you or special achievement that you’ve accomplished during your time at the organization?
MNO: We have many stories and special moments. One of our clients, Verónica was suffering from domestic violence when she came to our office and she didn’t know what to do. At Dress for Success, she received psychological attention and this allowed her to see things more coldly. Through our self-esteem workshop, she understood that she had to be strengthened, valued, and that economic independence would give her freedom. Without having the necessary studies she was hired at a dispatch of accountants. She had a strong desire to get ahead in life for her children so she learned the necessary skills and managed to move up gradually. Months later, Veroónica thanked us for having been able to transform her life into one that was balanced, quiet and full of opportunities. She had just bought her car and was another woman who had made the best of herself!
DFS: Who do you thank or recognize this Women’s History Month that have helped make the advancement of all women possible?
MNO: I thank all those who have provided opportunities for women. In my particular case, my boss at the beginning of my career gave me that push to for my development and growth that I had more confidence in myself. He always said, ‘If you propose, you do it.’ I also thank my mother, since she taught me to have strength during difficult times and to fight for my dreams.
DFS: What motivates you to continue your work at Dress for Success?
MNO: Contributing to the greatest extent to improve the conditions of women in Mexico. By providing new tools, opportunities and ways they can make a change, they will succeed. With access to information and new knowledge they’ll grow and this will undoubtedly improve the conditions of future generations.
