Meet Annie Hurlbut, Founder of Peruvian Connection

Peruvian Connection is a woman-owned company, founded in 1976 by Annie Hurlbut and her mother, Biddy. Hurlbut knows first-hand how difficult it is for women to achieve success in their career and is honored to partner with an organization dedicated to providing the resources they need.

“Our inventive designs and sophisticated silhouettes allow women around the world to find confidence through the art of fashion,” said Annie Hurlbut, Founder of Peruvian Connection. “We are elated to put our passion for self-expression behind a cause that empowers so many women to present the best version of themselves.”

DFS: What professional and/or personal accomplishments are you most proud of and why?

AH: The professional accomplishment I’m most proud of is having built a brand. It’s not something I could ever have accomplished on my own… it required the efforts of a group of talented individuals who all drank the Koolaid, who all believed in our mission of creating exceptional artisan apparel for nomads and romantics.

DFS: What does Success mean to you?

AH: Success to me means getting to collaborate with people I love to work with on a mission that inspires us all.

DFS: How are you opening doors for women at Peruvian Connection?

AH: From the very beginning, Peruvian Connection offered women in Peru the chance to grow and develop their cottage industries along with our small company. Countless women were employed by these cottage industries when the unemployment rate in Peru was well over 50%.  In the States, we have greatly benefited from a staff of dedicated, hardworking and talented women, most of whom live in Tonganoxie, McLouth, Lawrence and Kansas City. Many have been with us for 20+ years and many of those have created incredible careers for themselves within our company.

DFS: What’s one piece of advice you wish you could tell your younger self?

AH: The strength of a business, and in our case a brand, is the people who work there. Don’t let anyone tell you that a product or an idea is what makes a company great… greatness depends entirely on stakeholders who believe in and nurture the company’s mission.
