Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Big Magic”

Poise in the Workplace

Do you know what your most valuable asset in the workplace is? It might not be what you think. If you acquire this asset, you will instantly stand out in your job as a valuable employee. People will take notice of you for all the right reasons. You will command respect, no matter what your position in the company is.

So what could this mysterious asset possibly be? I’ll give you a hint: it’s not something that you can buy. It has nothing to do with money. I’ll give you another hint: it’s something that anyone can have. Yes, anyone. Here’s one last hint: it is something you can’t quite put your finger on, but when someone has it you just know there is something special about them.

The asset I am talking about is poise. Poise is a graceful and elegant bearing in someone. Poised people have good manners, good decorum and present themselves well. This is such a valuable asset in the workplace because all of these traits show that you are reliable, dependable and committed. Your behavior and the way you present yourself puts others at ease, whether they realize it or not. Poise is powerful because those who have it command respect.

A major part of poise is personal presentation, not only with good posture, diction and eye contact, but also with how you dress and how you express your personal style.

Every morning when you get dressed, you make a choice of how you would like to present yourself to the world. As a poised person in the workplace, your wardrobe choices should be appropriate, professional and reflect your individual style. You do not need to buy expensive clothes or even have a wardrobe filled with lots of clothes to do this. You just need a few key outfits that fit you well, are appropriate for your job and reflect your personality.

If you are unsure what your true style is, it is a great idea to pick neutral, basic clothing. You can always inject personality with your accessories like scarves or jewelry. If you work in a conservative office environment, for example, you can never go wrong with classic looks like a simple, black dress, navy or beige trousers, a white blouse or a black blazer. These items can be worn in so many different ways with many combinations that you will never get bored of, but can feel confident in. The great news is you can find outfits that meet this criterion at any price range.

We all make visual judgments every day and your employer, customers and coworkers are no different. As we work on our poise, our newfound changes will be reflected in our wardrobe choices and set us up for success in whatever career we choose.

Karen Amster-Young and Pam Godwin’s “The 52 Weeks”

How many times have your weekdays blended together? Going to work on Monday and coming home to the same leftovers for dinner by Thursday. Book Shelf: Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Coast Trail”

Life is an unexpected journey. Sure, this is a phrase we have all heard before, but sometimes it takes the unexpected to remind us to be grateful for the life we are fortunate to have.

It was the unexpected that sparked the most meaningful adventure Cheryl Strayed would embark on in her life and, lucky for us, she documented this journey in her biography Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail. Wild is a powerful memoir that tells the story of one woman’s eleven-hundred-mile solo hike from the Mojave Desert to Washington State and the way it healed her.

At the age of twenty-two, Cheryl thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother’s death, devastation caused her family to fall apart and her own marriage was inevitably brought to an end. At one point, Cheryl even turned to drug abuse for relief. Reeling from catastrophe and feeling as though she had nothing to lose, four years later she decided she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail. With no experience or training, and dependent upon the kindness of strangers she meets along the way, Cheryl’s decision to travel alone through California and Oregon to Washington State was single-handedly the most impulsive decision she had ever made—and the best one at that.

Cheryl’s story is one of promise. With each challenge, bruise and blister from the trail, Cheryl relays how her determination allowed her to overcome each physical and emotional hurdle. Dear 23-year-old Ashley,

Right now, you have no idea that you are laying the foundation for your future. Seize every opportunity, knock on every door, glean from every experience.

Those dreams that keep you up at night will finally become a reality. You just have to be brave enough to take that leap of faith. You have to be relentless enough to sacrifice some sleep, nights out with the girls and even those shoes you’ve been eyeing.

Now, before you head down this path to success, let me give you my five must-remember tips:

5. For a season, for a reason – As you and your life begin to take shape, some people, places and things just aren’t going to fit anymore. You might outgrow some relationships and friendships. Never burn a bridge, but don’t be afraid to cross and walk away from one either.

4. “Fall down seven times, get up eight” – Girl, you are going to make so many mistakes. Be humble and strategic. Own up to them but learn from them. Then, seek advice from wiser council so that you don’t make that same mistake twice.

3. “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know” – You must stay connected to your network and tap into your resources. All of those former classmates, colleagues and acquaintances have a wealth of knowledge and contacts. Nuture those relationships and remember to help others.

2. “Be your own cheerleader” – Not everyone is going to be as excited about your dreams as you. You also can’t share your dream with everyone. Don’t get discouraged. Find allies who want to hear about your vision and will work with you to help your business grow. Also, market yourself and your products outside your inner circle and start building a loyal customer base.

1. Don’t ever give up. You are stronger than you think.
