Team DFS Marathon Series: Michaela

Meet Michaela! Known as the “Running Freak” amongst the Equinox Preston Hollow staff, Michaela is no stranger to running for a cause. The 2018 TCS New York City Marathon will be Michaela’s fifth race and she has supported charities such as Child’s Saving Institute, Habitat for Humanity, The Stewpot and now Dress for Success. Running with Team DFS will be especially meaningful for Michaela because she is running to help women who are in or have been in domestic abuse relationships and help them find their path to economic independence.

Read about what motivates Michaela below:

  1. How long have you been working at Equinox and what motivates you to continue doing what you do?

I have been a Membership Advisor with Equinox since February 2018. I also worked at Equinox in 2017 before moving out of state. What motivates me to continue doing what I do is the fact that I get to have an open conversation with those looking to better themselves and starting that journey with their fitness. Everyone has a story and their Equinox story starts in my office. I get to interact with all of our members every day.

  1. What has been your proudest moment along your running journey (during or before joining Team DFS)?

My proudest moment, in my running journey, was finishing my first ever marathon! It was crossing the finish line after 26.2 miles and that no one could ever take it away. I did it all on my own, from training to giving up time with friends/family and the physical/mental pain, I was stronger than I could have ever imagined. It made me realize I could do anything I set my mind to.

  1. What will completing the 2018 TCS New York City Marathon [for Dress for Success] mean to you, how do you hope it will inspire other women?

Completing the 2018 TCS New York City Marathon will mean to me that no matter what life throws at you a positive thing is on the other end. If it wasn’t for the pain, suffering, sadness and loss I experience earlier this year, this would never have been possible! I hope to inspire other women that even during the toughest times there are positive outlets to turn to and not get stuck in negative situations. It’s finding a hobby that you love and using it to better yourself!

  1. What does women’s empowerment and/or self-sufficiency mean to you?

To me women’s empowerment means women everywhere have the opportunity to be educated and confident and successful in their goals. They have the power to be self-starters. To be self-sufficient means having financial independence. Not relying on the man because a women has to ask permission. I go back to a quote from the show, Very Cavallari. In it, Kristin Cavallari – an entrepreneur mogul who has achieved every goal she has set out for herself, from television shows to books deals, to her own fashion line – says to her husband: “The girl should have her own stash. No girl should ever have to stay in a relationship because a guy is supporting her. I’m with you because I love you. Not because I need you”. She and her husband are a team but it’s her independence that has created her success!

  1. What does health and wellness mean to you? What does it look like for you?

Health and wellness means that I have a clear mind and a body that is treated with respect and care. I have one life. I have one body. It’s up to me and me only to nourish it to the best of my ability. My mind and body wellness check comes in everyday when I am able to put on my headphones and go for a run. It clears my thoughts. It allows me to unwind from the day. At that point I can tell if I need more sleep, or if I have better energy from one day to the next. I eat very clean because of past medical issues. Most people assume I am a picky eater but it’s what makes my body function the way I need it to. I’d rather have to be picky in my food so I am not sick all the time and not miss out on running. They all work together.

  1. What would you like to say to your colleagues, friends, and loved ones who have supported you and donated to your fundraiser thus far?

I can’t thank you all enough! Without your support and understanding none of this would have been possible. Y’all have shown me what unconditional love is. To my family, thank you for listening to me talk about another race obsessively.  To my friends and colleagues who have understood that before I can do anything I need to run. From asking how my training is going to if I need anything to text messages that make me laugh it’s all has gotten me to this place. I love you all!
