On April 4th, 2017 Joi Gordon, CEO of Dress for Success Worldwide, announced the launch of The Open Door Project, a social media initiative that celebrates women investing in each other’s success.
Joi explained, “I woke up this morning more grateful, more invigorated and more hopeful than ever before.
As women we always seem to be fighting against the infamous glass ceiling, barriers that can stop us from continuing our ascent. Over the past eighteen years, I’ve been focused on growing Dress for Success as an organization that would help women build the confidence we need to overcome any obstacle we encounter. It is imperative that we lift each other up; there is nothing more powerful than women helping women succeed.
This month marks the 20th anniversary of Dress for Success Worldwide, an organization truly near and dear to my heart. Over the past 20 years, Dress for Success has grown from a church basement in New York City to a global enterprise that has empowered more than 1,000,000 women in 23 countries throughout the world.
During the past two decades, I’ve watched women break barriers, overcome the unthinkable and transform right in front of my eyes. Many of these women have been survivors of domestic violence, the prison system, poverty, debt, homelessness, health battles, traumas and heartache. Through Dress for Success, they experience a broad range of programs – from job training to financial education – to help fulfill our mission of empowering women to achieve economic independence.
The vision of Dress for Success is a world in which women do not live in poverty. And it all begins by simply opening a door.
To mark our 20th anniversary, we want to shed light on the full scope of the innovative Dress for Success programs available to women and celebrate the success of one million women reached. Dress for Success is launching the #OpenDoorProject, a social movement that celebrates what our women exemplify each and every day – believing and investing in each other’s successes.
Dress for Success is using the connective power of social media and calling on YOU, citizens across the globe, to unite around a movement of gratitude and confidence that empowers and lifts up each and every one of us.
This movement reminds us that the creation of a better, fairer world ultimately relies on simple acts of kindness at the grassroots level, with and among ordinary people committed to achieving extraordinary things. All women need to reach out to another woman, to help inspire her and ensure that all doors and opportunities are open to her. What makes us successful is that we recognize we are in this together. When we actively help and appreciate each other, we are unstoppable.”
