Since 1997 Dress for Success has been an organization that empowers women to achieve economic independence. It may have started with a suit but it has grown to be so much more. Dress for Success provides professional attire and development tools, like job training, financial literacy, and a variety of career workshops to help women succeed in the workplace and in their lives. The nonprofit organization has now expanded to 150 cities in 23 countries worldwide and has helped nearly 1,000,000 women. That itself is a monumental milestone to be celebrated on International Women’s Day (IWD). Who better to talk about the importance IWD than Dress for Success Worldwide’s very own CEO, Joi Gordon.
“Women are key players in the global economy. When they have economic power, everyone benefits – their children, future generations and the rest of society,” said Joi Gordon. “Every single day at Dress for Success we see the power of women helping women, whether volunteering to review another women’s resume, donating a suit or contributing financially to our organization.” Every small gesture makes a lasting impact on a women’s life and can change the world.
This year’s International Women’s Day campaign theme is #BeBoldForChange. It’s about taking action to drive change for women. According to the World Economic Forum, they predict that the gender gap won’t close until 2186. Which is why everyone needs to declare and take bold action not just today but everyday. For Gordon, her bold action to improve a woman’s career started when she first made her donation to Dress for Success. “When I went to Dress for Success to drop off my donations, I saw the crucial work the organization was undertaking,” said Gordon. “The idea that something so simple – a suit – could bring a woman closer to achieving her dreams, inspired me to change my own path.” Gordon has seen the progress the nonprofit has made first hand and couldn’t be prouder. “I’ve been part of Dress for Success ever since and have seen this organization touch the lives of nearly 1 million women globally!”
Joi Gordon urges women to join forces and make their voice heard on International Women’s Day. There are several ways to take action for women and #BeBoldForChange. Start by being a mentor and providing guidance to the women in your life. Reach out to your local, pro-women organization and find out what they need and how you can help. “Being involved in making a change is a bold action in and of itself, and no step is too small, no impact insignificant,” said Gordon.
For International Women’s Day, Dress for Success will be celebrating throughout the month of March by highlighting their international affiliates on the blog and across all social media channels. Affiliates play a very important role in the success of the organization and all the work they do to support their local communities. Check back tomorrow and get to know all Dress for Success affiliates across the world. Also make sure to follow the organization on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. “International Women’s Day is a time for us to both celebrate women and their contributions – all of the ways that they impact communities, culture, the economy and so much more,” said Gordon. “[It’s also a time to] draw attention to ways that we can support women and ensure each one has the same opportunities to achieve success, whatever it may mean to her.”
